1881 Census Maps and County Codes

At the time I compiled all the 1881 maps using the first nationally digitally available census, which was on a series of 24 CDs, I had to search the whole country region by region, CD by CD, in order to create a spreadsheet. In order to make sense of where people lived in relation to the regions I used the Chapman County Codes to link them to the various regions on the CDs. This allowed me to link the various regions and counties on the CDs. A second piece of  Archer software was used to create the maps. It may sound complicated but as the results are visual they will hopefully help people see where their YOXALL ancestors lived in the UK in 1881.

All my maps are compiled using Archer Software and are of two types, Flood fill and Dot type. Flood fill maps are a broad distribution of a surname in a county, so if there was 1 or perhaps 50 people in a county the colour on the map would be the same. Nor would you know where the people lived. However with a Dot map, the people in a county are recorded by dots exactly that show where they lived. So not only can you see where they lived in the county, the size of the dot changes in accordance with the number of people in that county. This helps suggest where to look in particular counties for Parish Registers of ancestors.

The 1881 census on CD divides the country into 12 regions and 12 CDs. To present the information I have created separate dot maps for each of the 12 regions, well 10 actually as in 1881 there were no YOXALL in Scotland.
