GRO Birth, Marriage & Death Spreadsheet notes

Apart from details on the GRO Birth, Marriage & Death Indexes I have added several columns of my own, for which a few notes may be helpful:

Column A allows the user to sort the spreadsheet easier

Columns B & C are the Surname & Forename of the individual

Column D allows the user to identify an ancestor from my database by searching the spreadsheet using the id no. generated by my database.  This search method can be used on all my GRO and Census spreadsheets.

Columns E, F, & G are used by me to help find links to people I couldn’t link originally, by recording what I knew about them. Unlike my database these details are not kept up to date, they are for my use only as links are sought.

Column H is used only for GRO deaths and is added to allow those familiar with spreadsheets to merge my Birth, Marriage and Death spreadsheets on a single spreadsheet. This allows searching for a database id no. on all 3 spreadsheets, where not only the birth of a person but their spouse(s), children and death may be found in a single search.

Column I is used only for GRO births, where after 1911 the maiden name of the mother is recorded.

Column J is used only for GRO marriages, where after 1911 the surname of the spouse is recorded.

Column K records the parents of the child, possible parents of the child, spouse, or no suggestion if I don’t have any suggestions for parents or spouse.

Column L is used only for GRO marriages and is added to allow those familiar with spreadsheets to merge Birth, Marriage and Death spreadsheets on a single spreadsheet. This, like column H, allows searching for a database id no. on all 3 spreadsheets, where not only the birth of a person but their spouse(s), children and death may be found in a single search.

Columns M, N & O are the qtr and year of Registration, column M being specifically added to enable sorting by exact year and qtr.

Column P is included to allow me to include a chart and table to illustrate the distribution of YOXALL births during 5 year periods.

Columns Q, R, S & T are the exact District, County, Vol & Page details recorded on the GRO

Column U serves no purpose unless the user merges all Birth, Marriage and Death spreadsheets, as the letter ‘B’ makes sorting into individual events that much easier.

Column V is another column used for sorting, whereby people who are not yet linked to parents, or for whom I have possible links, can be brought together to allow me to review these two categories regularly, rather than having to plough through all Births.

General Notes:

For ease of identification I have highlighted BMDs in separate colours, green for Births, yellow for Marriages and Red for Deaths. When all 3 spreadsheets are merged in date order it is easier to identify Infant deaths, particularly those who were born and died between census and prove to be the most difficulty to link without spending a fortune on certificates.

Like my Census spreadsheets, I have used a common template for all three GRO spreadsheets, allowing them to be downloaded and merged on one spreadsheet and sorted in ways that may help suggest where YOXALL ancestors may have lived, whether an ancestor died as an infant, etc.

All data on the GRO, such as surname and forename(s) are recorded exactly as they are recorded on the GRO.
